City Scapes ~ Part 9
WILLIAM AUGUST BERND WHO HAVING COME TO THE UNITED STATES at the age of 18, made his way to Sandpoint at in 1903 at the age of 41. In 1907, Bernd purchased property from L. D. Farmin, on which he planned to build a “good and substantial brick, two-story building” in the 300 block of north First Avenue. The new building bearing the Bernd name was completed in the fall of 1907 and he opened a fourteen-bed hotel on the second floor. He leased the south half of the ground floor as a dry goods store and the north half of the ground floor as a grocery store. The Bernd Hotel was operated until 1920 until uninterested heirs let the building go rather than pay the mortgage.
This building is now the site of the Coldwater Creek Retail store in Sandpoint, Idaho.
